GEOGRAPHY & LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN ESANLAND

Esan land is bordered to the south by Benin City, to the south-east by Agbor, to the north and east by Etsako, to the west by River Niger. From Ewu to Benin City, the State capital, is 100 km long.

Before the creation of Edo State in 1991, Esanland was located in the defunct Bendel State. Esan was a division of the Mid-Western Region with Benin City as its Headquarters. It occupied about 43008.42 square kilometres segmented into two local government areas named: a. Agbazilo to the east and b. Okpebholo to the west.

In recent times, the number of the administrative units has increased to five, namely:

1.   Esan Central,

2.   Esan West,

3.   Esan North East,

4.   Esan South East and

5.   Igueben from the former Okpebholo and Agbazilo.

1. ESAN-CENTRAL

Headquaters: Irrua

2. ESAN-West

Commerce, Cottage industries, Farming Wood processing, Furniture making.

Commemorative statue of Professor Ambrose Alli, Ibiekuma River and Onojie Palaces.
 

Natural Resources: Limestone and Timber.
 

Major Agricultural Products: Cocoa, Oil palm, Rubber, Kolanuts, Cassava, Cocoyam Pineapple, Rice and Citrus fruits.

The Professor Ambrose Alli University Teaching Hospital is at Ekpoma, along with various public health centers, private and public hospitals, clinics and maternity homes.

In addition to the Prof. Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, there are forty-eight (48) primary schools and twelve (12) Ekpoma.

3. ESAN-NORTH-EAST

There are fifteen (15) secondary schools and thirty-five (35 private primary schools. Among these schools are the Our Ladies of Lourdes Girls College, and Onewa Technical College.

 

4. ESAN-SOUTH-EAST

The Onojie’s Palace.
 

Natural Resources: Clay, kaolin, Sandstone, Laterite, and Timber

Cassava, Rice, Yam, Maize, Melon, Fish, Okro, Rubber, Cocoyam,

Health Facilities: The General Hospital, Health Care Centres.

There are ten (10) public secondary schools and forty primary schools.

 

Igueben

Headquarters: Igueben

The Okomu-Udo National Game Reserved, and Amhor Waterfalls.
